Ryan Reynolds wasted no time telling Welcome to Wrexham viewers how he really felt ahead of Wrexham AFC’s history-making promotion.
“I feel very nervous, like, very very nervous,” Reynolds, 48, said during the Thursday, June 26, episode of Welcome to Wrexham, which acted as the show’s fourth season finale. “Like, adult diaper nervous.”
Reynolds’ comment didn’t actually come before a Wrexham soccer (football in Wales) game, rather a match involving their toughest competition. Ahead of April’s history-making win, the team was up against the Wycombe Wanderers for automatic promotion into the Championship League.
Wycombe’s game against Leyton Orient is what caused the stress for Reynolds as the results of this match would determine if Wrexham would be the team getting an automatic promotion. The Wycomb v. Leyton game took place hours before Wrexham was set to take the field.
“That was the moment I think all of us, everybody, the entire town, went ‘Holy s***, this could happen,’” Reynolds said in his confessional. “We could not only be promoted, but we could make history doing it.”

Wycomb lost 1-0, meaning that if Wrexham beat Charlton Athletic that same day, they would be promoted from League One to the Championship League. Spoiler alert, Wrexham won the game 3-0 and made history as the first team in history to win back to back to back promotions.
Reynolds and Wrexham cochair Rob McElhenney bought the team in 2020 with the goal to take the team to the Premier League. Now, they’re one promotion away.
“I just want to bask, would you let me just bask? We’ll talk about the championship next year,” McElhenney, 48, joked when asked about what’s next for the team. “A few years ago, we were not in the English Football League. They asked us what was our goal, and I said the Premier League and people laughed. No one’s laughing anymore. … Now we’re one away from the Premier League. It doesn’t make any sense, it defies all rational thinking.”
Reynolds added, “A back to back to back promotion doesn’t happen. The only place it could happen is here. Wrexham’s the only place that this kind of historical miracle could happen in. Because of the town, because of the club, because of its history, because of its sadness, because of its joy, because of its perseverance and all of that comes together to make miracles, and that is doing a Wrexham.”
