The Town of Orono will allow two-way traffic over the Main Street bridge starting on Friday evening.
Construction work has partly closed the Brandon M. Silk Memorial Bridge, resulting in a 4.6-mile detour down College Avenue to Stillwater Avenue and down Bennoch Road that has rankled commuters.
Throughout the week, traffic can only flow northbound through one lane over the bridge. On Wednesday, the town announced that the two-way traffic pattern will be adopted when possible. Weekend traffic pattern changes will be announced by the town on Thursdays.
A notice on the town’s website describes the work as resurfacing the bridge, which carries traffic along Main Street (Route 2) over the Stillwater River.
Traffic has been impacted by a number of road work projects in the Orono and Old Town area, including on the Llewellyn Estes Bridge and the bridge that carries traffic over the Stillwater River at Gilman Falls.
