In cooperation with the Maine Department of Transportation, the Town of Orono is working to allow two-way traffic over the Main Street bridge on weekends.
Construction work has partly closed the Brandon M. Silk Memorial Bridge, resulting in a 4.6-mile detour down College Avenue to Stillwater Avenue and down Bennoch Road that has rankled commuters.
Currently, traffic can flow northbound through one lane over the bridge. On Wednesday, the town announced that the two-way traffic pattern will be adopted when possible. Weekend traffic pattern changes will be announced by the town on Thursdays.
Officials say that the current plan is to start laying pavement on Friday, weather permitting. A notice on the town’s website describes the work as resurfacing the bridge, which carries traffic along Main Street (Route 2) over the Stillwater River.
