Dance Moms star Brooke Hyland told fans her mom, Kelly Hyland, is scheduled to undergo “open heart surgery.”
Appearing in a TikTok video shared on Tuesday, June 24, Brooke, 27, said that her mother, 54, who completed breast cancer treatment in August 2024, is suffering from a “leaking heart.”
“You guys all watched her … finish up her chemo and all of her breast cancer-related things. Unfortunately, right after that, she got news that she needs to get open heart surgery,” Brooke said in the video while applying makeup in front of the camera. “She has a TikTok but she doesn’t like to post, so I figured I would update you guys so you know what’s going on and you can send all of your prayers her way.”
Brooke, who appeared on the Lifetime series with her mom and sister Paige Hyland from 2011’s season 1 to the end of season 4 in 2014, also offered fans a timeline of Kelly’s medical plans.

“She was originally supposed to have surgery on Friday but now she has to go in tomorrow,” Brooke said, referring to Wednesday, June 25. “They are hoping to go in robotically but if they aren’t able to reach her heart then they will have to go in the traditional way … terrifying. Her heart is currently leaking.”
The health update comes less than one year after Kelly reached a major milestone amid her breast cancer battle. A video shared via Instagram on August 20 last year showed Kelly ringing a bell to mark the end of her first treatment. “Next steps surgery, 20 radiation and 11 more treatments. I GOT THIS,” Kelly captioned the moment.
Brooke detailed that her mom had seen several doctors prior to booking in her surgery this week. It presented Kelly with conflicting reports on how and when the alleged leaking heart originated. “She’s had a few different opinions from doctors, some say that she’s had it since she was younger and her valve just doesn’t close properly [while] others have said that it might be a side effect of the cancer because it could be a tear,” Brooke said in her TikTok. “I don’t really know. She’s getting it fixed. Thankfully, some of the scans she had gotten for her cancer actually showed that she had this, which is a blessing.”

Kelly revealed in May 2024 that she had been recently diagnosed with breast cancer. “The first red flag was my significant weight loss,” she told E! News at the time. “I lost enough that others noticed and would ask for my dieting hacks, but there was nothing I had changed in my day-to-day to cause the loss.”
She added that she broke the news to her and ex-husband Randy Hyland’s three children, Brooke, Paige, 23, and Josh, 24, via a phone call. “I would’ve liked to have told them in person but a phone call was the best I could do given the circumstances,” Kelly explained. “I did a four-way call with all of my kids because I wanted to tell them at the same time and make sure they were all given the same information.”
