A federal pause on visas is threatening Maine schools that depend on international students. The Trump administration stopped scheduling visas for international students in late May to expand vetting of their social media.

Maine is in danger of running out of money to pay public defenders. The Maine Commission on Public Defense Services faces a $13 million funding gap that could hit in less than a year.

Gov. Janet Mills issued her first vetoes of the legislative session. Mills has rejected proposals related to public defense, protections for agricultural employees, oversight of the state ferry service, and state use of eminent domain to take Native American land.

One of Maine’s biggest real estate companies is expanding to Mount Desert Island. A merger will allow Portside Real Estate Group to meet demand it has felt from consumers, according to the company’s founder.
