A storm wreaked havoc on Beechwood Island in We Were Liars episode 5 — but it also allowed for some steamy love scenes.
The Prime Video show’s fifth installment, titled “Lying Together in a Silver Lining,” opens with Cadence (Emily Alyn Lind) still suffering from the aftermath of the 4th of July in Summer 17.
Back in Summer 16, the entire Sinclair family is hunkering down for the aforementioned storm.
Mirren (Esther McGregor) is hiding out in the lighthouse, which she transformed into an art studio, with water taxi driver Ebon (Dempsey Bryk). Things between them are going great until Cadence accidentally throws a wrench in their budding love story. Basically, Cadence alludes to Mirren’s mom, Bess (Candice King), cheating on her husband, and Penny (Caitlin FitzGerald) forces her daughter to “spill” the details. Bess, angry at her daughter, confronts Mirren in the lighthouse, and the two get into a blowout fight.
“If you need some me time, get a hobby. Finish your degree, maybe, or divorce Dad and then run away to Paris because at least there’s honor in that. Cheating on him in open air isn’t some self-care. It’s f***ing disgusting,” Mirren yells before Bess ruins all of her artwork. “I didn’t ask for you to waste your life on me and neither did the twins. You chose to be a mother, you chose. It’s not our fault that you decided to hate it.”
Elsewhere on Beechwood, Johnny (Joseph Zada) and Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) are also arguing, until Johnny realizes that he promised his little brother, Will (Brady Droulis), that they would go canoeing. Will is missing — seemingly stuck on the water in the storm — so Johnny and Gat go and find him. Will is floating but has nearly drowned when Johnny puts a life vest on him, and they start swimming back to their grandfather’s boat. However, Johnny gets too tired and also nearly drowns. Gat saves them both.

After the storm is over and all the boys are safe, Johnny tells Gat the reason for his big secret. Essentially, rival tennis team players started a harmless prank war, but when Johnny and his teammates got caught retaliating, things escalated. (Johnny’s plan was to flood and then freeze the other school’s indoor tennis courts.)
“I kicked his ass, and I left him there in the f***ing cold. I wasn’t thinking about the cold,” Johnny admits. “When I found out he was in the hospital, I called my mom and she fixed it.”
When Cadence finally wakes up in Summer 17, she discovers that she’s been out of it for days, and The Liars are walking on eggshells around her — but she and Johnny make amends after their fight in the previous episode. Cadence, thinking that it’ll help trigger her memories, goes cliff-jumping and becomes the third character to nearly drown in this episode.
After the tension of both days in Summer 16 and Summer 17, Cadence and Gat come together for deep conversations — which lead to sex. Summer 16 has them professing their love to each other for the first time, and Summer 17 involves more passion as they reunite after her accident.
