Oct. 7, 2023, has been called the worst strategic and intelligence failure in Israel’s history. The regime in Israel has previously supported Hamas and ignored warnings of an imminent Hamas attack. It seems to me almost as though Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wanted an excuse to unleash an apocalyptic military attack on Palestinians.
Israel has not eliminated support for Palestinian sovereignty. And criticism of Israel has only grown. An obvious answer, it seems, was to change the conversation by starting a war with Iran.
With his military birthday extravaganza having fizzled, his budget bill stalled amidst Republican squabbling, his administration losing numerous court cases about executive overreach, and millions of Americans participating in No Kings protests, President Donald Trump has also changed the conversation — by essentially treating whether America will attack Iran as a reality TV teaser.
Our government needs to listen to the Constitution. Whether America goes to war is a decision for Congress. Coming to consensus through reasoned debate of empirical evidence could certainly change the conversation. For the better.
