Ginny & Georgia might be going through some cast changes in season 4 — but could certain characters move on in spinoff form?

During an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Humberly González teased whether her character, Sophie, could return after graduating from high school.

“I have no idea. I didn’t even know if I was going to come back in season 3. This is something the creators choose — especially because I have no idea where season 4 is going to go,” González, 33, noted. “I don’t know if it’s going to follow chronological order. What if we go forward in time or backwards in time?”

González didn’t rule out a return, adding, “What if we were right where we left off? Then yeah, I guess we would see graduation. What if it’s a continuation and Sophie asks Max to go to prom? There’s a lot of different avenues I could see here.”

Which ‘Ginny and Georgia’ Stars Are — And Aren’t — Returning for Season 4?

Ginny & Georgia, which premiered in 2021, follows a young single mother who moves her family to Wellsbury, Massachusetts, after running away from her past. González won over fans on the hit Netflix series as Max’s (Sara Waisglass) off-and-on girlfriend. Despite their breakup, Max and Sophie continued to cross paths throughout season 3, which started streaming earlier this month.

“I’m always really happy to come and do a little cameo. Obviously, I think the majority of Sophie’s story line was at the start of the show and it’s always cool to see how it could all wrap up. But that’s the life of an actor,” she explained. “You graduate to other projects and you’re like, ‘OK, I must say goodbye to this other one that I really love.’”

González admitted that she would miss the show’s fans the most.

“It’s probably one of the best fandoms — if not the best fandom I’ve ever had. They’re so lovely and so supportive. The majority of them are women and young and queer and it’s so fun,” she told Us. “I get really amazing messages about people feeling seen and heard. Also just how important the character that I portrayed helped them either come out or feel just less alone and supported. That means a lot to me — especially since season 3 came out during pride month.”

After hearing Us‘ pitch for a Sophie spinoff in New York City, González gave her stamp of approval, quipping, “Netflix, if you’re listening right now, we got something to pitch you here. That’s the beautiful thing about this industry. You never know where it could go. I’m so proud of this show. I remember initially auditioning for [Ginny & Georgia] and it was just one tape that landed me the role. I didn’t know if she was going to be in one or two episodes. She ended up being in way more than I thought and it gave me so much more than I could have even imagined.”

González continued: “It gave me beautiful friendships, beautiful opportunities, exposure and this fandom that they found me in different shows and they’ve stuck with me. … I know we can’t give up hope. I didn’t know if I was going to come back in season 3 and that was a beautiful surprise to me as well, so that was such a treat. We’ll see what happens. Stay tuned, I guess.”

Everything to Know About ‘Ginny & Georgia’ Season 4 After Pregnancy Twist

For now, González is focused on The Waterfront, which offers a grittier glimpse at the Buckley family — including son Cane (Jake Weary) — who have ruled the North Carolina town of Havenport for decades. Their attempt to retain control of their fishing empire ultimately leads them to partake in dangerous activities. González is introduced as Cane’s high school girlfriend who comes back into his life.

“I hope that my Ginny & Georgia fans will come and watch The Waterfront because it’s about the person who plays these characters and how they grow. It’s not necessarily just about one character,” she teased. “That’s what I love about what I do. It’s fans who like you for your artistry and are not necessarily married to one character. It’s my 10th year of doing this professionally this summer and so it still feels like the beginning and a new chapter. I’m just very grateful to have two Netflix shows come out back to back. It’s kind of insane. Definitely a dream come true.”

Ginny & Georgia and The Waterfront are both streaming on Netflix.
