Rep. Nina Milliken and her band of five others supported me and others like me by initially voting against the state budget changes. Rep. Milliken is right, us poor and working-class Mainers cannot afford more taxes. Taxes on things like cigarettes, Netflix and paint have the most impact on people who can’t afford them. I think this budget is akin to the anti-robinhood — take money from the poor and give it to the rich.
I applaud Rep. Milliken for her advocacy for people like me, an average Mainer. I am a single mom of two kids, one with a disability, and I work very hard to make ends meet. I can’t afford any additional taxes.
Reps. Milliken, Sally Cluchey, Cheryl Golek, Grayson Lookner, Rafael Macias and Sophie Warren understand this, it seems. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for their bravery standing up to their caucus that seemed dead set on funding the state on the backs of poor people, rather than making the rich pay their fair share.
