Cadence Uncovers [Spoiler] Nearly Killed Someone on ‘We Were Liars’

Cadence (Emily Alyn Lind) finally uncovers one secret about what went down during Summer 16 — but she’s no closer to getting answers about her accident.

We Were Liars episode 4, titled “The Fourth of You Lie,” kicks off with present day Cadence in Summer 17 writing a series of notes about what she knows so far. The biggest question as of now: “Why is Johnny (Joseph Zada) lying?”

Most of the episode is spent in a Summer 16 flashback as The Liars — Cadence and Johnny, along with Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) and Mirren (Esther McGregor) — throw a huge party on Beechwood Island.

Carrie (Mamie Gummer) reveals that she ran into Gat’s girlfriend on Martha’s Vineyard and Cadence (trying not to look crazy but definitely seeming bothered) pushes him to invite her. Upset with her feelings about Gat and him being in a relationship, Cadence gets drunk. (It’s giving Belly in The Summer I Turned Pretty, if you know, you know.) Gat’s girlfriend never does come, in fact, he breaks up with her for Cadence.

Elsewhere, Ed (Rahul Kohli) tells Johnny about his plan to propose to Carrie. Johnny gets emotional and starts to spiral as well. Things get worse when Johnny’s tennis friends from school arrive at the party and he gets, what Cadence called, “that scary look.”

As for the moms, they’re still fighting over the late Tipper’s (Wendy Crewson) belongings. Carrie attempts to smooth things over with their dad, Harris (David Morse), but he ends up revealing some family secrets. For example, Penny (Caitlin FitzGerald) is “spending half her budget,” Bess (Candice King) has no money in her trust fund and Carrie used all her money on “drugs and fancy rehabs.”

After the fight, Carrie declines Ed’s proposal. Bess, meanwhile, didn’t know her account had been drained. It turns out, her husband, Brody (Dylan Bruce), has been draining her trust fund.

Back in the present day, Cadence looks to Johnny’s phone for answers. Although Gat begs her to stop looking.

“Have you ever thought that you’re not remembering for a reason?” he wonders. “That your mind is trying to protect you?”

Naturally, Cadence doesn’t listen and hacks Johnny’s phone. What she finds is a video of Johnny beating someone up and nearly killing him. Carrie catches Cadence watching the video and freaks out.

“She unlocked my phone, and she gave it to my mother who is now seeing my entire private life, Cadence,” Johnny yells at his cousin. “My texts to my dealer my Grindr profile, she’s crying so hard she won’t even yell at me. Who does that?”

Johnny calls Cadence “f***ing crazy” for her actions.

“I wouldn’t have to do all of this if someone would just tell me the f***ing truth,” Cadence says, asking Johnny what he did before passing out and starting to seize.
