KENNEBUNK, Maine (WGME) — Two people were injured after two boats collided off the coast of Kennebunk.
The crash happened late Thursday afternoon about a mile from the jetty at the Kennebunk River.
Kennebunk Fire-Rescue Chief Justin Cooper said a commercial fishing boat called “The Flying Dutchman” hit a chartered schooner named “Eleanor.”
One person on each boat was injured, he said. The sailboat had damage to the hull and took on water and the commercial boat was leaking diesel.
Cooper said he happened to be in the exact area on his fishing boat and was among those who responded, taking care of one of the people injured and her husband on board.
Officials said tides have washed away most diesel fuel. Water access at Gooch’s Beach is swim at your own risk for the next 24 to 48 hours.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
