A new shop in downtown Bangor plans to offer ice cream, grab-and-go food and other sweet treats when it opens this summer.
The Downtown Spot, at 73 Main St., is planning to open in mid-July, owner Roscoe Witham said. Witham — who also owns Float 207, a sensory deprivation tank in Hermon — said he wanted to expand into a new venture and came up with the idea with his fiancee, Rachel Moyse, who owns Utopia, a restaurant at 96 Hammond St.
It’s the first sign of life for the storefront at the corner of Cross and Main streets that has sat empty since November 2022. It comes as a number of other businesses also move into empty stores in downtown Bangor.
The new space, located across the street from the Maine Discovery Museum, will have grab-and-go food from Utopia like sandwiches, salads, hummus and family-size take-and-bake meals. It will also serve soft and hard serve ice cream, as well as milkshakes and dairy-free options.
The shop will also have freeze dried candy and fruit, as well as beverages. The goal is to offer healthy, easy meal choices, as well as treats, Whitham said.
The opening date depends on securing the last of the licensing and inspections needed, Witham said.
It’s not the only change to downtown Bangor this year. Log Jam Vintage opened at 8 Harlow St. in May, as its neighbor White Lobster Vintage is scheduled to close in June. A new salon, The Girl House, is opening on Main Street. Palomas Gifts moved into 30 Central St. in February, while Dream In Gold Jewelry opened this month at 98 Central St.
Mainely Tacos Dos is scheduled to open this year at 64 Main St.
The new home of the Downtown Spot has sat empty since November 2022, when the Solstice Cafe closed its doors after being open for just more than a year. Jeweler G.M. Pollack & Sons closed at that location in 2009, and a computer repair business was open for a handful of years after the jewelry store closed.
