The Bucksport girls track and field team won the Class C state outdoor championship for the first time in school history Tuesday night.
It was an unprecedented moment for a team that was firing on all cylinders.
“I think it’s the biggest accomplishment we could ever achieve,” Golden Bucks runner Madison Rose said Tuesday night, before the results were official but the win looked to be locked up. “It would be the first time ever, and I think everyone on this team deserves what happens.”
The Bucksport girls tallied 91 total points to win the Class C title at Messalonskee High School in Oakland on Tuesday, followed by Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield with 72.50 and Orono High School with 65.
Assistant coaches Lindsey Gordon and Johanna Stiles had both previously been members of the Bucksport team during their own high school careers, and were excited for this squad to make history. They were filling in for head coach Matt Morrison, who was unable to attend the state meet after it was rescheduled from Saturday to Tuesday due to bad weather.
“The girls just did so well, and came to compete and win,” Gordon said. “They did amazing.”
Stiles and Gordon said the team has discussed their potential for a first-ever state title ahead of time.
“We talked about it a few weeks ago. We’ve never won states and we had the chance,” Stiles said. “Everyone, as long as you place where you should be, we should win. And everyone did actually better than where they were supposed to place.”
Bucksport Athletic Director Daniel Magas said the program has had strong teams for several years, and credited this group of “really talented girls” for their performance on Tuesday.
“It’s incredible. Everyone showed up and gave their all,” Magas said.
