This letter regards an upcoming vote on LD 1474, “An Act to Strengthen the Teaching of Wabanaki Studies in Maine Schools.” I am writing to voice strong support for this legislation and to encourage others to support it as well.
My experience generally as a teacher and specifically working with Wabanaki advisors has convinced me that strengthening the partnership between Wabanaki nations and Maine schools leads to more honest, effective, and engaging teaching and learning. I believe this bill is a meaningful step in the right direction as it will ensure a permanent position in the state department of education for a Wabanaki specialist.
Integrating Wabanaki studies into our teaching practice is required by law, but more importantly it creates a culturally affirming environment for students from Wabanaki nations, here in Bangor often from the Penobscot Nation. Wabanaki studies further involves teaching practices and content that benefit all students and lead to better engagement and learning. Some of these practices include cross-curricular integration, project-based learning, hands-on learning, student-centered learning, and ecological and environmental awareness.
Learning from Wabanaki advisors is a process that takes time, which is why I consider it essential that the Wabanaki specialist position is made permanent through LD 1474. This will ensure ongoing engagement, connection, and partnership that benefits our education system.
We expect votes on this bill soon, so now is a great time to voice support for the bill by contacting your state legislators.
