SOLON — Somerset Woods Trustees and Somerset County Soil & Water Conservation District are teaming up to host a “Managing Your Woodlot Post-Harvest – Without Herbicides” workshop on Saturday, June 21 (rain date Sunday, June 22) from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at Pfeiffer Tree Farm, 176 Lily Pond Road in Solon
Join Peter Pfeiffer at his woodlot in Solon for a morning focused on herbicide-free methods of encouraging a healthy stand of young trees after a harvest. Pfeiffer will touch on tree identification, thinning and pruning of crop trees. He will also demonstrate his tools and techniques of choice and show participants the results of his work in an area which he thinned and pruned in years past.
Pfeiffer has worked in the Maine woods since 1974, often on his carefully tended 113-acre woodlot in Solon conserved with Somerset Woods Trustees in 2008. Pfeiffer has twice been named the Somerset County Tree Farmer of the Year, and in 2018 he was named the Certified Logging Professionals Logger of the Year.
The workshop will begin at Pfeiffer’s mailbox on the Hole in Wall Road. Participants will then informally carpool with stops and side-trips into the woods along Lily Pond Road. Space is limited and advanced registration is requested: https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/8dCO_S5XnyjExhqjHyLP6Q.
