Torch Run continues across the state, concluding at Opening Ceremonies

ORONO — Special Olympics Maine is proud to announce that the 2025 State Summer Games will take place this weekend, June 6–8, at the University of Maine. More than 2,100 athletes and coaches from every county in Maine will participate in a weekend full of competition, celebration, and community. With the addition of volunteers, families and fans, the event is expected to draw over 3,000 people to Orono.

Athletes, ranging in age from 7 to over 70, will compete in sports like bocce and track & field, while our Young Athletes Festival on Friday morning offers children ages 2–7 a chance to participate in developmentally appropriate, inclusive play and fitness activities.

This event is the culmination of months of hard work and training for our athletes. But the State Summer Games are about more than just sport—they are about friendship, health, and community. Athletes will stay in dorms, visit the Olympic Village (hosted by youth leaders), receive free health screenings through our Healthy Athletes program, and enjoy social events like the Saturday night dance.

Weekend highlights:

Friday, June 6:

  • 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM: Bocce Competition
  • 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Young Athletes Festival (ages 2–7)
  • 12:00 PM – 3:30 PM: Track & Field Events
  • 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM: Parade of Athletes
  • 7:30 PM – 8:00 PM: Opening Ceremonies featuring remarks from UMaine and Special Olympics Maine leadership

Saturday, June 7:

  • 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM: Track & Field & Wheelchair Events
  • 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM: Olympic Village & Healthy Athletes Screenings
  • 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM: Athlete Dance

Sunday, June 8:

  • 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM: Final Competitions
  • 10:30 AM: Friendship Circle & Closing Ceremonies

Reminder: The Flame of Hope is on the move!

In the days leading up to the Games, law enforcement officers from across Maine are participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run, carrying the Flame of Hope through towns and cities statewide. The Torch Run will conclude at Friday’s Opening Ceremonies, uniting athletes, officers and supporters in a powerful celebration of inclusion and perseverance.
