Maine Roller Derby, the state’s longest-running and largest roller derby league, is thrilled to announce its upcoming recruitment season featuring an Info Night, two Skate Nights and a Tryout Night. The events will take place at the Portland Expo Center at 239 Park Ave. MRD invites community members to join us to learn more about the sport, meet MRD league members, watch a scrimmage and discover the fascinating world of roller derby.
Info Night – June 16 at 6:30 p.m. If you are interested in joining MRD as a skater, skating official, non-skating official, volunteer or want to learn more about the tryout process, gear and things you can do to prepare for our next intake, join us for our info night.
Skate Nights – June 18 & 23 at 6:30 p.m. Meet skaters and officials, learn about MRD, ask questions and watch a scrimmage! Lace up to get a feel for what skating in derby gear is like! ($5 fee for those skating and you must have all gear to skate: roller skates, helmet, elbow pads, wrist guards, knee pads, mouth guard – no exceptions).
Tryouts – June 25 at 6:30 p.m. All gear and basic skating skills are required. For more info, visit our website or email [email protected].
“If you’re interested in joining as a skater or skating official, you’ll need to have a few basic skating skills first. We’ll teach you everything else in time! If you’re not a skater, we always need more non-skating officials and volunteers! Anyone who’s even the least bit interested should come check us out – there’s a place for everyone in our league,” said Chopped Liver, the head of new recruits.
For more information about skating or volunteering with Maine Roller Derby, interested individuals are encouraged to contact Chopped Liver via email at [email protected]. Those interested in learning about what it takes to join MRD can also find us at the Pride Portland festival, Saturday, June 21 in Deering Oaks in Portland.
