A 74-year-old man was rescued around 11 a.m. Wednesday from Borestone Mountain after falling and sustaining serious injuries, according to the Moosehead Lakeshore Journal.
The hiker, whose name has not been released, was reaching for a water bottle after summiting the Piscataquis County mountain when he fell 15 feet onto rocks, then fell another 10 feet, according to the newspaper. Fellow hikers, including two midcoast-area nurses, provided first-aid and called 911.
He sustained potential spinal injuries, lacerations, abrasions and head trauma but was in stable condition, according to the Moosehead Lakeshore Journal.
The Monson Fire Department was the first agency to the summit and was assisted by fire departments from Greenville, Sangerville and Dover-Foxcroft, along with the Maine Warden Service and Maine Forest Service.
After first responders airlifted the man off the mountain, LifeFlight of Maine flew him to a nearby trauma center.
