Kristen Stewart, never one to shy away from a sartorial or somatic statement, recently graced the Cannes Film Festival with a fresh piece of ink with a surprising NSFW meaning.
On Friday, May 16, Stewart, 35, stepped on the Cannes red carpet in a white Chanel shorts suit that showcased a bold tattoo of the word “MINE” on her lower right thigh. Fittingly, the body art was revealed at the actor’s directorial debut premiere, The Chronology of Water (which received a six-and-a-half-minute ovation by an enthusiastic audience).
The Twilight alum already has at least 12 other tattoos, but the new addition is directly inspired by a pivotal, explicit scene in her new movie. As Stewart delightfully divulged to Vulture, the word springs from a scene so audaciously visceral that it practically demanded a permanent tribute.
“The coolest song in the movie is when she c***s on her hand, smells it, wipes it on her f***ing bicep, and goes, ‘I didn’t know a girl body could do that. Shoot c**e,’” the director recounted. “And then this song comes on and it goes, ‘Mine, mine, mine, mine.’ And it’s just f***ing mine.”

This powerful, self-affirming declaration from the film resonated so deeply that Stewart chose to permanently ink it onto her skin — with plans for her crew to get matching tats, too.
Yet, “MINE” isn’t the only word she wanted to immortalize on her body pre-Cannes. With a pointed gesture to her upper arm, she told the publication: “I have ‘Why’ tattooed right here.”
As Stewart explained, the ink speaks to The Chronology of Water’s challenging nature and deliberate runtime.
“I don’t think the movie is long,” she added, referring to its two-hour and eight-minute duration.
She emphasized, “It’s a serious f***ing movie. We deserve to take up space. I didn’t need to make an hour-and-a-half digestible experience, so it would be less difficult for the consumer. It’s cool that at one point you go, ‘Are we still doing this? Why?’”

It seems Stewart, ever the provocateur, delights in making her audience ponder and perhaps squirm a little. She also likes to turn heads at the film festival, which she did with pink hair tips and a glam yet gory origin story. She readily admitted they were inspired by “a bloody motif.”
“I wanted to bring a little bit of the movie into my body,” she shared.
