Husson University has found its next athletic director, and it is someone who knows the Bangor school well.
Amanda Nelson played basketball and softball for Husson and graduated in 1997. She will be returning to campus in June as the new athletic director.
“Husson has grown and developed in such positive ways since my time as a student. I am looking forward to helping Husson to elevate the brand and be the best we can at both academics and athletics,” Nelson said in a Monday press release from the school. “I’m humbled and overwhelmed to be coming back.”
Nelson will begin the new position on June 1. She spent the last three years director of athletics for Del Norte High School in San Diego, California.
Nelson was inducted into the Husson Hall of Fame in 2017, with the school describing her as an “elite” pitcher and hitter who held 30 different softball records when she finished her college career. She became the first pitcher in school history to throw a perfect game in 1994. On the basketball court, her hall of fame overview describes her as a shooter that other teams had to account for as part of coach Kissy Walker’s squad.
Nelson will replace former Husson Athletic Director John Sutyak who recently left to take the same position at the University of Southern Maine.
“We are thrilled to welcome Amanda Nelson back to Husson University as our new Athletic Director. Amanda brings a wealth of experience and knowledge, and is an exciting addition to our stellar Division III athletic program,” Husson President Lynne Coy-Ogan said in a statement.
