
A clam fisherman is missing off the coast of Milbridge.
Alton Wallace, 51 of Milbridge was reported missing about 4 p.m. Sunday when he failed to return home after a day on the water, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Searchers found his 14-foot skiff near Pinkham Island.
The Coast Guard, Maine Marine Patrol, other state and local agencies, and more than 15 volunteers failed to find him Sunday.
The Coast Guard suspended its search effort at 8:45 a.m. Monday.
“This is a tragedy for our fishing communities,” said Capt. Matt Baker, commander of Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. “Our hearts are with the family and friends of everyone impacted by this tremendous loss.”
Maine Marine Patrol and State Police dive teams are searching the water in Narranguagus Bay for Wallace. Search efforts have focused on the area near Fickett Point at the mouth of the Narranguagus River, according to the marine patrol.
Wallace’s cellphone last pinged about 7:30 a.m. Sunday.
The Coast Guard will continue to support the Maine Marine Patrol’s search for Wallace.
