The Southern Maine Community College softball team is returning to Maine as World Series champions Friday.
The Sea Wolves won the Small College World Series on Thursday with a 10-0 victory over Florida National University. It capped a 32-7 season for the community college that ended with the team’s first-ever national championship, according to a press release from the school.
“This is a milestone moment for our college and our student-athletes,” the college’s interim athletic director, Ethan Wells, said. “Our players’ hard work, talent and resilience brought them to this championship, and they’ve made the entire SMCC community incredibly proud.”
Southern Maine Community College and Florida National had already played each other twice in the double elimination tournament, with each team winning one game before the decisive final contest.
The SeaWolves poured on 13 hits in that final, with third baseman Delanie Perry providing four RBIs. Courtney Frohaug and Emily Hutchins of Kennebunk each had two RBIs, and pitcher Sarah Wilkins added another. Wilkins pitched a complete game shutout and gave up only two hits in her 16th win of the season.
The U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association World Series was held in Dubois, Pennsylvania, this week.
