3 Underrated Hulu Movies to Watch This Weekend (May 16-18)

With Final Destination: Bloodlines now playing, horror looks like it will dominate the box office this weekend. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find it at home as well. One of 2024’s best scare flicks, Oddity, is currently streaming on Hulu and delivers more frights than any movie out there.

Hulu has other genres besides horror that are worth checking out. For period drama lovers, try streaming Mothering Sunday, a relatively unknown British film starring The Crown actor Josh O’Connor.

Rom-com enthusiasts and Thunderbolts* fans will surely enjoy Press Play, a sweet sci-fi love story starring Lewis Pullman as a man trapped in a time loop destined to die unless the girl who loves him does something about it.

Watch With Us recommends you stream these three underrated Hulu movies this weekend, or at least put them in your queue so you can watch them later.

‘Oddity’ (2024)

Darcy’s twin sister, Dani (both played by Carolyn Bracken), is brutally murdered one night, and she wants to find out why. Olin (Tadhg Murphy), one of her brother-in-law Ted’s (Gwilym Lee) former psychiatric patients, is believed to be the culprit, but Darcy isn’t so sure. When a mysterious life-sized golem arrives at Ted’s country house, he brushes it off as a weird gift from an in-law who claims to have psychometric powers. But Darcy’s supernatural gifts turn out to be true, and the golem may be the key to finding Dani’s true killer.

Oddity lives up to its title — it’s odd and creepy, and it uses a largely stationary object (the golem) to great effect. While the plot eventually gets a little too complicated for its own good, Oddity always maintains an unsettling vibe that really gets under your skin. If you’re looking for a horror film that doesn’t rely on excessive gore to scare you, check out Oddity.

Oddity is streaming on Hulu.

‘Mothering Sunday’ (2021)

It’s England in the 1920s, and Jane (Odessa Young) works as a maid to the wealthy Niven family. She’s good at her job but does one thing she’s not supposed to do — she’s sleeping with Paul (Josh O’Connor), the Nivens’ son. To make matters worse, he’s engaged to be married to Emma (Emma D’Arcy), the widow of his dead brother. Paul and Jane love each other, but can they overcome their class differences to be with one another?

Mothering Sunday sounds like a soap opera, but it’s more sobering and thoughtful than that. Paul and Jane want to be together but know that it’s impossible due to the society they live in. As the doomed lovers, Young and O’Connor are appropriately swoony and despondent over their road-to-nowhere affair. While the movie isn’t shy about showing some skin, Mothering Sunday isn’t that erotic; instead, it’s more of an esoteric study on how a seemingly inconsequential romance can haunt someone for decades.

Mother Sunday is streaming on Hulu.

‘Press Play’ (2022)

The internet fell in love with Lewis Pullman when Thunderbolts*, the latest MCU extravaganza, stormed into theaters in early May. But Watch With Us has been a fan of the actor before it was trendy, and one of his best films is this charming, low-key sci-fi movie that manages to include several gratuitous shots of Pullman shirtless wearing board shorts.

11 Great Rom-Com Movies on Hulu Right Now (May 2025)

He plays Harrison, a surf dude about to leave for med school when he meets Laura (Clara Rugaard). They hit it off right away, but tragedy strikes — Harrison is killed by a car, leaving Laura devastated and unable to move on with another person. Years later, she discovers a magical mixtape (just go with it) that allows her to time travel back to the moment she first met Harrison. Can she prevent Harrison from getting killed and achieving the happy ending they both deserve?

Press Play is streaming on Hulu.
