An Orono man faces drug trafficking charges after a traffic stop in Bangor on Monday night.
Thomas Pope, 48, has been charged with aggravated drug trafficking and violating his conditions of release, according to Sgt. Jason McAmbley, a spokesperson for the Bangor Police Department.
Pope was the passenger in a vehicle that police stopped near the intersection of Hammond and Union streets about 9:30 p.m., McAmbley said Wednesday morning.
Pope was under bail conditions that prohibited him from using alcohol, cannabis and illegal drugs.
During the traffic stop, police reportedly found drugs inside the vehicle, according to McAmbley.
Pope was arrested, and while he was en route to the Penobscot County Jail, he allegedly removed a bag of drugs from his pants and tossed it out in the backseat.
When found, Pope denied the bag of drugs was his. But the camera in the cruiser’s backseat reportedly showed him removing the bag and discarding it where the officer later found it, according to McAmbley.
The contents of the bag are believed to be cocaine, fentanyl and methamphetamine.
Pope remained at the county jail as of Wednesday morning.
