A number of rare orange lobsters were released back into the wild on Ram Island.
Around 30 lobsters had been raised and studied by University of New England students over the past year.
The university allows students to get involved in the research, meaning not only are they gathering valuable information, but also training the next generation of scientists.
A rare orange lobster named Peaches that was donated to the university by a lobsterman a couple of years ago was the mother of the baby lobsters. Half are also a stunning orange color.
The team was very excited about releasing the babies after studying the different colorations of lobsters and what causes them.
“It was really cool seeing them go from little, tiny guys to now they are actual lobsters. You can see it,” said Kai Watkins, a graduate student.
“It’s really cool. It’s a once in a lifetime thing. An egg-bearing lobster is rare, but an orange one is just completely out of the books,” said Claire Fecteauvolk, another graduate student.
The release happened at 8:30 a.m. Monday.
