A Farmington man allegedly tried to kill his girlfriend when she broke up with him.
James Oakes, 44, has been charged with attempted murder, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and domestic violence assault, according to the Sun Journal.
The victim was severing her four-month relationship with Oakes at the Mount Vernon apartment they shared on the morning of May 3.
When she got out of the shower, Oakes was allegedly standing in the doorway with a rifle pointed at her. He allegedly told the victim he was going to kill her and then himself, the Journal reported.
She talked him into putting down the gun and going out for coffee so they could talk, according to the newspaper.
After coffee, she drove them toward her mother’s home in Wilton. On the way, Oakes allegedly tried to swerve the 2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer off the road near the intersection of Cape Cod Hill and Vienna roads, the Journal reported.
She pulled over, and Oakes jumped out before getting back in and allegedly trying to “snap her neck.”
He allegedly grabbed the wheel again and drove toward a guardrail next to a bridge, hitting it and nearly sending the Trailblazer into the brook 30 feet below, according to the Journal.
Oakes fled on foot but was arrested a short time later.
He was being held at the Franklin County Jail in Farmington.
