The Husson women’s lacrosse team has accomplished something for the first time in program history.
Last Saturday, the Eagles won their first ever North Atlantic Conference Championship. And as a result, this Saturday the team will play in its first ever Division III NCAA tournament game.
Husson secured that historic NCAA tournament bid with a 12-11 comeback win over Maine Maritime in the conference championship a week ago. The Eagles outscored the top-ranked Mariners 5-1 in the fourth quarter to bring home the NAC title.
And now Husson will take on the 13th ranked Division III team in the country, facing William Smith College of New York. That NCAA tournament first round game will be held in Amherst, Massachusetts, at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Husson went 7-7 during the regular season while the William Smith Herons headed into the postseason with a 12-4 record. The winner of Saturday’s game, the first ever matchup between these two teams, will move on to play Amherst College on Sunday.
Leading the Eagles this season are senior Natalie Whitten, junior Averi Baker and freshman Kate Boehmcke. The trio have combined for 90 of the team’s 177 goals this season, according to Husson Athletics.
Boehmcke was named the NAC Rookie of the Year earlier this week, and Baker and Whitten both earned all-conference honors along with sophomore Riley Maynard. Senior Jordyn Lengle was named a co-defensive player of the year in the NAC.
