Flames erupted from a manhole outside the Auburn City Hall on Thursday afternoon.
The fire broke out on Court Street about 1:37 p.m. at a manhole that was under construction, according to the Auburn Fire Department.
Crews responded quickly and extinguished the flames within minutes, though it took several hours to put out the remaining hotspots underground. The road fully reopened about 9:50 p.m.
Investigators believe an accident at the construction site ignited the underground resin liner that crews were installing, the Fire Department said.
One worker was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
