Every You fan wanted Jenna Ortega to reprise her role as Ellie in the show’s fifth and final season — and in a way she did.

The last installment of the hit Netflix series, which premiered on Thursday, April 24, revealed that Ortega’s character, Ellie, was Dominique (Natasha Behnam) and Phoenix’s (b) benefactor amid their take down of Joe (Penn Badgley).

Behnam weighed in on the subtle nod, exclusively telling Us Weekly at the Wednesday, April 23, red carpet premiere, “That was so cool. We were guessing who [that] was because we didn’t even really know in the beginning. Then as the series unfolded itself, we were like, ‘Oh, this is Jenna Ortega’s character.’”

The actress found it “really iconic” to have her character connect back to Ellie. Ortega, 22, previously appeared on season 2 of the hit Netflix series but subsequently found success on Wednesday.

Which ‘You’ Characters Are — and Aren’t — Returning for Season 5

While viewers were hoping for a cameo, Ortega was too busy in Ireland filming the highly-anticipated second season of Wednesday. The supernatural series introduced Us to a new version of the iconic Wednesday Addams character when the show premiered in November 2022.

Before Ortega took over as the moody and spooky teenager, Christina Ricci famously brought the character to life in several Addams Family films, which took inspiration from Edward Gorey‘s illustrations. Season 2 is expected to be released in multiple parts with the first half on August 6, while part 2 is slated for September 3.

You Series Finale Ending Explained
Netflix

You, meanwhile, has come to an end after five seasons on Netflix. After evading the law for so long, Badley’s infamous anti-hero went to prison for every crime he committed — and got shot in the penis.

Multiple cast members addressed the shocking twist, with Charlotte Ritchie telling Us, “Where we leave him, he’s just not even vaguely capable of looking at the blame anywhere else except for somewhere else.”

Which Former ‘You’ Stars Made Surprise Cameos in the Show’s Final Season?

Ritchie, 35, weighed in on Joe’s brutal injury, adding, “I was like, ‘That’s full on. I guess symbolically it’s very important. But there is something about his brain that is the scariest part of him in the way we see him. He’s really violent in this series where he shows brutality and physical violence that’s very specific in this show. But broadly his threat is his mind and his ability to talk to people.”

Despite Joe remaining alive by the end of you, Ritchie, who portrayed Kate on the show, still felt that justice was served.

“In a way it’s symbolic but it’s like he still retains the part of himself that is manipulative and controls people,” she concluded. “He sorts out his heart and his head. Whatever happens to his penis is neither here nor there.”

You is currently streaming on Netflix.
