Just in time for more clement weather, Acadia National Park’s carriage roads are reopening.
For now, the carriage roads will be open only to foot traffic, the park said Tuesday morning.
The carriage roads closed in mid-March to protect the 45-mile network as warmer weather arrived and with it wet conditions. Maine’s “fifth season” — mud season — leaves the carriage roads vulnerable to damage — particularly potholes, ruts and erosion — from bicyclists, walkers and horseback riders.
That risk remains from bicyclists and horseback riders who can damage the soft road surface. So for now, horses and bicycles aren’t allowed on the carriage roads.
Acadia National Park recently restored its carriage roads, with the last six miles around Eagle Lake being completed in 2021.
