Two people are dead after they crashed an SUV into a tree and it burst into flames in Readfield early Monday morning.
The crash happened about 12:52 a.m. on Main Street, according to Lt. J. Chris Read of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators believe the Ford Flex SUV may be the same vehicle that passed a Maine state trooper on North Road in Readfield at speeds exceeding 70 mph earlier, Read said Tuesday morning.
The trooper was looking for the vehicle when the officer came upon the crash scene.
Two people were found dead inside the burning wreck. Their identities are being withheld until the Maine medical examiner’s office can positively identify them.
The crash remains under investigation.
