The National Trust for Local News has named a new CEO to oversee its operations.
Tom Wiley, the publisher and president of The Buffalo News, will take the helm of the nonprofit news group on May 12, according to the Portland Press Herald.
The National Trust for Local News owns newspapers in Colorado, Georgia and Maine, where it owns more than 20 newspapers, including four of the state’s five daily papers. The Bangor Daily News is the only daily paper not owned by the group.
In Maine, its newspapers are operated by the Maine Trust for Local News, which formed last summer after the nonprofit acquired a substantial portion of Reade Brower’s Masthead Maine empire.
Wiley is taking control of the national nonprofit after a period of turmoil that saw the organization’s co-founder and CEO Elizabeth Hansen Shapiro step down. Its Maine papers saw an exodus of executives over the past several months, including Publisher and CEO Lisa DeSisto.
The Maine Trust for Local News announced last month the layoffs of 36 full- and 13 part-time employees, none of which included reporters and photographers.
