Rep. Jared Golden prides himself on being able to work with Republicans. In principle, this is how our government should work. However, I think the whole “Signal” debacle; DOGE illegally and worse unintelligently decimating government agencies and programs; the appointment of cabinet members to destroy the very agencies they were appointed to head; the pardoning of Jan. 6 criminals; and what I see as the extortion (illegally and unprecedented) of large law firms to do the president’s bidding, should make Golden question if he has a reliable partner to work with.
Exhibit 2 that I think should cause Golden concern is the Republican lauding of Viktor Orban, the Hungarian autocrat, at events hosted by CPAC and the Heritage Foundation. At a CPAC event in 2022 in Dallas Orban said: “I have also learned that in order to win, it is not enough to know what you are fighting for. You also have to know how you should fight. My answer is: Play by your own rules!”
America is governed by the rule of law. Therefore, you can love democracy and our Constitution or you can praise and adopt the tactics of Viktor Orban, but you cannot do both.
