I want to thank Sen. Susan Collins for what I see as her clear and courageous stance on Title IX and for continuing to lead with common sense at a time when it’s in short supply.
As a Washington County commissioner for 20 years, I’ve seen Collins time and again bring reason to the most unreasonable situations. I believe Gov. Janet Mills has sadly chosen party politics over the sentiment of her state. That’s why I think Collins’ position is such a needed voice for the vast majority of Mainers, regardless of political affiliation.
She’s made it clear: The conflict between how Maine and the Trump Administration interpret Title IX must be resolved. And I believe she’s right to support the federal position that transgender students should not compete in girls’ and women’s athletics. That stance, I believe, is not about exclusion, it’s about fairness because Title IX was created to provide equal access based on sex, not gender identity.
I agree with Collins. We can and should treat every individual with dignity and respect. But when it comes to athletics, biology matters. The original intent of Title IX was to create a level playing field for female athletes. Policies that ignore that risk undoing decades of progress.
Collins continues to be a steady hand for Maine. She’s not afraid to stand up for what’s right, even when it’s politically inconvenient. In a time when too many leaders cave to pressure, I think she continues to lead with principle. We need more of that in public service.
