Garrett Libby will not be returning as the boys basketball coach at Old Town High School after leading the Coyotes since the fall of 2019.
The Old Town athletic department posted the head coaching job vacancy to the RSU 34 website on Tuesday.
Neither the athletic department nor Libby provided specific information on Wednesday about why Libby is no longer the coach. Old Town Athletic Director Jeremy Bousquet said the department couldn’t comment on Libby’s departure given that it’s an employment matter.
“We thank him for his time with the program and wish him luck,” Bousquet said.
Libby also did not share the reason for his departure.
“All I can tell you is they haven’t given me much detail at this point,” Libby said.
Libby graduated from Old Town High School in 2013 and was a standout player and two-year team captain. He went on to play in college at Maine Maritime Academy and Husson University.
The most recent Old Town boys team went 8-10 during the regular season but made it as far as the Class B North semifinals with a tournament upset over No. 2 seed Ellsworth. The Coyotes went 15-3 the previous year and lost in the Class B regional final.
The team won five games or less in each of the two seasons before Libby’s arrival and had not made the high school basketball tournament since 2016. The Coyotes earned a tournament berth in his first season at the helm.
The Old Town athletic department is accepting applications for the now-vacant head coaching role.
“Old Town High School seeks a committed and experienced varsity basketball coach to lead our high school boys’ team,” reads a job opening announcement on the RSU 34 website. “We’re looking for a dynamic leader who can inspire student-athletes, build a competitive program, and foster a culture of hard work, discipline, and integrity.”
Old Town is looking to fill several other coaching vacancies as well, including an assistant coach for the track team focusing on the throwing events of shot put, discus and javelin.
The cooperative hockey team shared by Old Town and Orono is also in need of a head coach. The Old Town athletic department is accepting applications for all three open positions.
