A judge has ruled that a Belfast man accused of killing his wife and injuring his mother in February is not competent to stand trial, WABI reported on Wednesday.
Maine State Police charged Samuel Whittemore, 34, with murdering his wife, 32-year-old Margaux Whittemore, after her body was found on Feb. 19 outside his mother’s home on Giles Road in Readfield.
The state medical examiner ruled her death a homicide, but authorities have not released the cause.
Police also found 67-year-old Dorothy Whittemore, Samuel’s mother, injured inside the home, where she lived with his father, Henry Whittemore. She was brought to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with critical injuries and had been improving as of the last police report in late February.
Samuel Whittemore will be committed to Riverview Psychiatric Center or Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center and will continue to be ineligible for bail, according to WABI. The hospital will then submit reports to the court at set intervals if Whittemore competency is not restored.
