Chrissy Teigen recalled her 6-year-old son, Miles, asking “why me” following his type-1 diabetes diagnosis.
“He was really worried that it would affect if he could play sports,” Teigen, 39, told People in an interview published on Tuesday, April 15. “Can I have candy still? Can I have ice cream? All those things that only a kid would worry about.”
Teigen and husband John Legend — who are parents to Miles along with Luna, 9, Esti, 2, and Wren, 22 months — confirmed their eldest son’s diagnosis in July 2024. At the time, she posted a photo that showed the type-1 diabetes monitor on Miles’ arm.
“Soooo many of you reached out to say the most beautiful and incredible words I have ever witnessed on this platform,” she wrote via Instagram at the time. “I was, and am, so blown away by the kindness of this community, already.”

Teigen recalled during Tuesday’s interview that Miles was subjected to “blood test after blood test” after getting a “terrible” case of shigella, a sickness impacting the intestine.
“It really took Miles down harder than a lot of the other kids,” the model said. “His pain was incredible, and he’s a pretty tough little boy.”
The family was eventually met with the diagnosis.
“We were thrown into this world of chaos and having to learn so much all at once,” Teigen recalled, noting that “everything was put on pause” in their lives as they learned more about Miles’ health.
Teigen said that she and Legend, 46, bought books to help Miles understand his diabetes — but she read them “more” than he did.

“It puts it in terms that are so easy to understand,” she continued, noting that Miles’ daily insulin injections have become the hardest part.
“The first three months were really, really tough for us as a family because your child is experiencing pain,” Teigen added. “One day you’re like, ‘He did it!’ And you’re so excited it’s all looking up. Then all of a sudden, the next day is so difficult again.”
Teigen said that Miles’ diagnosis has affected their entire family, even his siblings. While Luna is “a tough cookie,” she sometimes gets upset when Miles gets “a lot of attention” or “getting candy” when she doesn’t.
“You realize that everybody’s involved in this and you kind of figure out a way to navigate everyone’s different feelings and moods around it,” Teigen added. “That’s our job as parents. We’re happy to be a safe place for them to be able to come to and talk about if they are sad or not.”
