Ellsworth firefighters put out a blaze Thursday morning at an unoccupied apartment on Route 179.
The fire was reported at around 6:40 a.m. at 66 North St., a one-story building that consists of two apartments, according to Scott Guillerrault, chief of the Ellsworth Fire Department. Firefighters arriving at the building saw smoke coming from a vent pipe and the eaves but no flames, he said.
The fire was in the kitchen of one of the apartments, but the tenant was not home at the time, he said. The fire had been reported by the tenant in the adjacent apartment, where smoke detectors had sounded an alarm.
There was minor smoke damage in the adjoining apartment and damage from smoke, fire and water in the unit with the burning kitchen, Guillerault said. The flames were quickly put out.
Guillerault said no one was injured and that he is not sure if the building is insured, though the occupant who reported the fire said it was. He declined to identify the suspected cause of the fire, saying he did not have sufficient information to make an official determination.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation with the assistance of the state fire marshal’s office, he said.
He said 10 Ellsworth firefighters responded to the blaze and that an additional 10 or so provided mutual aid from Dedham, Hancock, Lamoine, Mariaville and Trenton.
