Just because The Handmaid’s Tale is ending doesn’t mean every question will be answered in the series finale.

During a red carpet event on Wednesday, April 2, for the hit Hulu series, creator Bruce Miller teased the show’s last episode, exclusively telling Us Weekly, “I hope [viewers] have questions when the show ends.”

Miller noted that Margaret Atwood‘s book “is way too complicated to tie up neatly” on screen. “When I read the book I had a million questions at the end,” he recalled. “So I hope if we’re doing justice to the story told in the book, certainly you’ll have questions at the end.”

Based on Atwood’s novel of the same name, The Handmaid’s Tale takes place in a dystopian future where low fertility rates have resulted in women being forcefully assigned to men for the sole purpose of bearing children. The Handmaid’s Tale premiered in 2017 and was renewed for six seasons — but it doesn’t stop there. The fictional universe is expanding with an adaptation of Atwood’s 2019 novel The Testaments.

Everything ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Cast Said About the Show Ending

“There are people who return and the same thing in the Testaments. We’re gonna bring characters from The Handmaid’s Tale to that world as well,” Miller noted while speaking with Us. “So there are people who show up — but to tell you who they are will take away all the fun.”

Meanwhile, executive producer Warren Littlefield called The Handmaid’s Tale‘s finale “really satisfying.”

“Living in the world of Gilead for our audience is sometimes a tough journey,” he teased to Us. “But I think their patience will be rewarded because this final year is ordinary women doing extraordinary things. The revolution is here and they’re highly effective. There’s joy. Is there still a Gilead? Yeah. But we celebrate what they accomplish and I think it’ll be very satisfying for the audience.”

Which ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Characters Are — and Aren’t — Returning for Season 6

Viewers, however, shouldn’t expect to get all their questions answered.

“We are going to begin a journey right away with The Testaments. That is still a world that has Gilead. But it’s a completely different point of view,” Littlefield added. “We will satisfy and really deliver triumphantly for our audience who’s been with us through six seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale. They will want and be curious to see more and see where The Testaments goes.”

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 premieres on Hulu Tuesday, April 8.
