Bishop James T. Ruggieri of the Portland Diocese sent a letter to families Friday announcing his decision to close St. Dominic Academy high school in Auburn.
Ruggieri said the high school portion of the academy, grades 9-12, will close at the end of the school year.
St. Dominic Academy programs will continue for students in pre-K through eighth grade. Those classes will be held at the Holy Cross campus in Lewiston for the 2025-26 school year.
In his letter to families, Ruggieri said an analysis of enrollment data over the past eight years and financial data over the past five years showed that the high school is no longer financially sustainable.
High school enrollment at St. Dominic Academy is currently 137 students.
Ruggieri said the school’s operational losses are forecasted to be approximately $2.5 million from 2020-2025.
He says support will be offered to students dealing with emotions from this news on Monday.
