A Peru man has been indicted in a 2024 collision that left another man dead.
The Androscoggin County grand jury on March 4 indicted 36-year-old Albert Deschaine on charges of manslaughter, aggravated assault, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and operation of a defective motor vehicle, according to the Auburn Police Department.
He was taken into custody on March 11 and released on $3,000 bail, police said Wednesday.
Deschaine was driving a 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck north on Turner Road about 10:27 a.m. on Oct. 7, 2024, when he hydroplaned and crossed the center line into the path of a 2022 Toyota Rav4 driven by 78-year-old James Halliday of Auburn, according to police.
Deschaine was ejected from the Chevy, but his injuries weren’t life-threatening. Halliday was critically injured. Both men were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
Halliday died on Oct. 20, 2024.
Speed and road conditions were considered factors in the crash.
No additional information was immediately released.
