Broadway in Bangor will be reduced to a single lane starting Wednesday for ongoing work on an Interstate 95 bridge.
The lane closures will be in place for Broadway where it crosses under I-95 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, according to the Maine Department of Transportation.
That will allow crews with Massachusetts-based New England Infrastructure Inc. to perform backfilling operations, the department said.
This work will not affect I-95 traffic.
It’s the latest step toward the eventual replacement of the aging bridge carrying I-95 traffic over Broadway. The 152-foot steel girder bridge, built in 1960, is crossed about 50,000 times daily and is in “poor condition,” transportation officials have told the Bangor Daily News. The Maine Department of Transportation expects to complete that work by late next year.
The project will cost $30.6 million, about $9.3 million of which is covered by a federal grant.
In recent years other I-95 bridges in Bangor have been replaced, including the Ohio Street bridge in 2020 and the Union Street bridge in 2016.
