A Portland man driving the wrong way on Interstate 295 died Friday morning when he collided with a tractor-trailer.
George Vandenburg, 86, was driving a 2018 Ford Fusion north on the southbound side of the Maine Turnpike, near mile marker 42, about 6 a.m. when he exited onto I-295, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
He later went through the toll plaza in South Portland.
Vandenburg collided with a southbound tractor-trailer near exit 4 on I-295, Moss said.
Vandenburg died at the scene.
The tractor-trailer’s driver, who wasn’t identified, was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was treated for injuries not considered life-threatening.
That collision shut down both sides of the interstate Friday morning. They have since reopened.
The crash remains under investigation.
