Selena Gomez never saw Benny Blanco’s proposal coming — so much so that she almost missed it altogether.
The couple, who got engaged in December 2024, revealed during their Thursday, March 20 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that Gomez was so “grumpy” that she almost skipped meeting Blanco on the day he planned to pop the question.
“We had to do a lot of promo for the album,” Gomez, 32, explained. “So I woke up, and I was very confused on what was happening, on where we were going, because it seemed kind of far. So, I’m kind of a little grumpy. I’m, like, tired… I said, ‘After this shoot, I’m going to go hang out with my friends.’ And he starts, I guess, going, ‘Okay, sure. We’ll see when you get here.’ “
Blanco, 37, recalled his take on Gomez’s unexpectedly ill-timed mood, as he tried to work out what to do next.

“She almost didn’t even come. She was like, ‘I really don’t feel that well. I think I’m just going to stay home today. Can’t we just make up the shoot another day?’” he recalled. “And I was like, ‘Uhh…’ I’m trying to figure out a way to do…”
The producer pointed out that there’s typically a lot of lying to a loved one involved before getting down on one knee — something he found difficult at the time.
“First of all, getting engaged to someone is the craziest thing in the world,” Blanco said. “It’s like, right before you’re going to tell someone you’re going to be married to them forever. They’re like, ‘Show me how good you can lie to me.’ It’s the hardest… She was just upset with me because the day before, I was making bad lies.”
The couple publicly shared the news of their engagement at the tail end of 2024 after more than a year of dating.
“Forever begins now,” Gomez captioned an Instagram post on December 11, which contained an image that showed off her engagement ring.
For his part, Blanco celebrated the relationship milestone by writing in the comments section, “Hey wait… that’s my wife.”

Since then, the couple has not been shy about publicly sharing details about their love for one another.
The pair spoke to Interview magazine published on Valentine’s Day last month and gushed over one another.
“You know when you think you met the right person, you’re like, ‘Oh my God.’ But it feels so different,” Blanco told the outlet. “The second we started hanging out, I was like, ‘This is my wife.’ I was telling my mom, ‘This is the girl I’m going to marry.”
Gomez was equally enamored, adding that she was the one who caught feelings first.
“It was really simple. We got in the studio to work on a song and we just talked; that’s how easy it was for me. I liked him before he liked me,” she said.
