Maine Maritime Academy in Castine has named a new president, after its previous president abruptly resigned in late May 2024.
According to a Wednesday press release, Craig Johnson, a 1991 graduate of the school, will take over the mantle after serving as interim president since June 2024.
Former president Jerald Paul, a 1989 graduate of the college in Castine, announced his retirement due to “extenuating family circumstances,” although it was not clear what those circumstances were.
“It is my pleasure to announce that following a thorough search, we have selected Craig Johnson to lead Maine Maritime Academy,” Maine Maritime Academy Board Chairman Wayne Norton said Wednesday. “He is well respected by faculty, staff and students alike. Craig has a steady hand and the vision to position MMA for the pivotal moments ahead in the maritime industry.”
Johnson has served as the academy’s COO since the position was created in September 2022. He was appointed interim president shortly after Paul’s resignation.
“I am honored by this appointment as permanent President of Maine Maritime Academy. The
maritime industry is on the precipice of incredible growth, and it has been a career highlight to
serve MMA as COO and Interim President as we create a roadmap that will ensure the Academy’s strength and sustainability in a thriving industry for decades to come,” Johnson said.
Johnson has worked in the maritime industry for three decades, and previously held a USCG First Assistant Engineer and Third Assistant Engineer license.
