The fireball that lighted up the Down East sky in February was, indeed, a meteorite.
NASA said that the object was most likely a low-mass meteorite, which was detected by a radar station in Houlton on the night of Feb. 21.
Witnesses reported hearing a sonic boom and seeing a fireball in the night sky, according to NASA.
The meteorite came down over an area near Codyville, an unorganized township with a population of 13 near the Canadian border.
“The fall site is heavily forested and it may be challenging to locate meteorites,” NASA said.
That comes nearly two years after another meteorite came down in Washington County, near Waite. The Maine Mineral and Gem Museum offered a $25,000 reward for anyone who found a piece that weighed at least 1 kilogram, luring cosmic treasure hunters Down East. No one has come forward with a piece of the meteorite.
