I stand with Ukraine and Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The world knows that Russia invaded Crimea and Eastern Ukraine in 2014. Then three years ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a column of tanks towards Kyiv in a failed attempt to take the capital of Ukraine. This was followed by a steady, attempted destruction of the whole country, including several probable war crimes. Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people have heroically fought back.
For U.S. President Donald Trump to again lie, in calling Zelenskyy a dictator who started this war, is another of his many attempts to rewrite history. The U.S. aid given to Ukraine had no strings attached. Trump demanding repayment, in the form of rare earth minerals, is not in America’s best tradition of being an unselfish benefactor to other countries needing assistance.
For the U.S. president and vice-president (neither of whom, in my mind, can match the character and integrity of Zelenskyy) to treat a hero the way they did on Friday, Feb. 28 is another low point in American history.
