Gov. Janet Mills on Tuesday announced her nomination of Michael Duguay for commissioner to the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development.
Duguay, who lives in Waterville, started his economic development career at DECD in 1990, according to the governor’s office, and is currently the executive director of the Harold Alfond Institute for Business Innovation at Thomas College in Waterville.
If confirmed for the position, Duguay would succeed Commissioner Heather Johnson, who in January announced she would step down after leading the department for six years.
A native of Fairfield and University of New Hampshire graduate, Duguay was a project manager for DECD’s Office of Business Development and Office of Community Development from 1990 to 1998, followed by a year as executive director of the Midcoast Council for Business Development.
He served as director of economic development for the city of Augusta from 1999 to 2012, then was director of business development for Summit Natural Gas before being hired by Thomas College in 2017.
His nomination will be reviewed by the Legislature’s Housing and Economic Development Committee, after which he must be confirmed by the Maine Senate.
