The gold standard for red-carpet fashion has always been and will always be the Academy Awards.

The biggest night in Hollywood has seen countless boundary-breaking, history-defining dresses, which is why we’ve rounded up the ultimate guide to the best Oscars looks of all time.

More recently, in 2022, Zendaya wowed in a Valentino crop top and mermaid skirt. (Many drew comparisons to Sharon Stone’s white button-down, lifted from her husband’s closet, and lilac Vera Wang skirt circa 1996.)

One year prior, Regina King sent cameras flashing in a light-blue custom Louis Vuitton gown featuring embroidered sequins and crystals one year prior.

Before that, Carey Mulligan delivered no shortage of sparkle or shine in 2021 when she wore a bespoke Valentino bralette and ball skirt embroidered with thousands of iridescent sequins that took 350 hours to create.

If we rewind all the way back to 1953, Audrey Hepburn memorably took home the award for Best Actress in the same ivory lace Givenchy frock she wore in Roman Holiday, the film she was nominated for. (After all, when a dress is that scene-stealing on film,  it’s well worth re-wearing for a real-life, red-carpet encore.)

From Gwyneth Paltrow’s pink taffeta Ralph Lauren dress in 1999 to Halle Berry’s sheer Elie Saab stunner in 2002, see the best Academy Awards looks ever to grace the crimson rug, below.
