A period of snow on Thursday will break up Maine’s streak of spring-like weather, reminding us that winter isn’t totally gone yet.
With most of Maine seeing temperatures in the mid to high 40s at the start of the week, snowfall on Thursday may dampen some spirits.
Snowfall in south central, southwest and western Maine is expected to start in the morning, according to National Weather Service forecasters. Total snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches is expected, although temperatures will continue to stay above freezing, resulting in a slushy mix that may disrupt travel Thursday morning.
Moving toward the central and northeastern regions of the state, snowfall is expected to total less than one inch as it mixes with intermittent rainfall. Temperatures will hover near the freezing point, with daytime highs in the low to mid 30s in the Penobscot Valley region and Aroostook County.
Around 1 to 2 inches of snow is expected to fall in Aroostook County communities, with areas of patchy fog through Thursday evening that could impact travel. Periods of snow could persist through the weekend in northern communities, before temperatures dip into the low 20s and teens through Saturday and Sunday.
Down East and midcoast communities will see daytime highs in the 40s, with just a quarter of an inch of snowfall expected through late Thursday evening. Periods of rain are expected throughout the day on Thursday.
Intermittent snowfall may continue into Friday morning for some Down East and midcoast communities.
Temperatures dip as we approach the weekend, with northern Maine expected to see daytime highs in the teens, central and eastern Maine expected to see temperatures in the mid to low 20s, and southern and western Maine expected to see daytime temperatures in the low 30s to mid 20s through the weekend.
